The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB; http://www.bacb.com/) has already announced the BACB’s newest credential – the Registered Behavior Technician™ (RBT™).
The RBT is the fourth credential used by the BACB - BCBA-D, BCBA, and BCaBA the other three – in an effort at establishing training standards for behaviour technicians.
What is a Registered Behaviour Technician (RBT)?
An RBT is a tutor as typically called in the UK who is responsible to implement behaviour plans directly with clients/parents designed by a consultant. Specifically, professionals with the BCBA credentials are generally responsible for service-delivery oversight (consultants) and professionals with the BCaBA credential typically act as assistants to consultants (supervisors), as opposed to individuals with the RBT credential who are responsible just for the implementation of any behavioural treatment plan. Therefore, professionals with the BCBA and BCaBA credentials become “designated RBT supervisors”.
Why is the credential important to families, agencies and therapists?
Completion of a 40-hour training program (conducted by a BCBA, or BCaBA certificant) based on the RBT Task List stands as one of the most important eligibility requirements for an individual to apply for obtaining the RBT credential.
Hence, credentialed RBTs are certainly more skilful and more qualified and therefore, more confident to provide the most effective treatment to their clients, ensuring higher standards of service.
In that respect, RBTs are more reputable than therapists/tutors who do not hold this credential.
